Information for Master Sculptors
Updated 7/22/10 We are pleased to announce that once again South Padre Island will be hosting some of the best sand sculptors in the world in a solo masters competition at the 23rd Annual SandCastle Days. Since SandCastle Days is an official qualifying event for the World Championship, the first pace winner will automatically be invited to compete in Federal Way, WA in 2011.
All serious sand sculptors are invited to apply for entry (details below.) Sculptors will receive a $500 stipend plus travel money -- as much as $500 -- depending on how far you have to travel to get to SPI.
We are changing things up a bit this year in the following ways:
Contest length - The contest will start on Wed., Oct. 20 this year, giving you four days to create your masterpiece.
Pairing individual sponsors with sculptors - we will do our best to find each of you a sponsor. If you can find your own ($1000) sponsor, you are in and can start making your travel plans. The sponsor logo will be carved by you someplace in your plot - either incorporated into your sculpture (in a tasteful way) or carved on a separate monument style poundup in such a way that it will be photographed when your sculpture is photographed. The logo must be completed by the end of Thursday.
Demo Sculpture - We are scaling back a bit on the demo sculpture this year, with only the major sponsors' logos included. Since we will have only two days to work on this, it is important that every sculptor arrive early enough to devote at least one full day to working on the demo - and we would be grateful if you could be here for two. This means you must arrive on Sunday or Monday.
As many as 20 qualifying sculptors will be provided with lodging and meals for the entire week. If we are unable to secure full sponsorship for all 16 sculptors, we may contact you to see if you are willing to compete for something less.
This contest will be self (sculptor) judged. We are still working on the prize package, but this will be the minimum:
1st Place: $1000
2nd Place: $750
3rd Place: $500
